The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has alleged that there is a scheme to add his name to an existing terrorism case before the courts, saying the move is part of a broader attempt to intimidate critics of government.
On Friday, Ssenyonyi claimed he had received information about a possible plan to implicate him in the ongoing terrorism proceedings linked to Butambala District.
"So, I’m told there is a ploy to potentially add me onto the ‘Terrorism’ file of Butambala, or one of those other files in court," Ssenyonyi said.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesperson suggested the alleged move was retaliation for his anti-corruption campaigns and his criticism of government.
"I’ve said previously; when you fight corruption, it fights back. Similarly, when you fight bad governance, it fights back! But we shall overcome," he added.
Ssenyonyi's remarks come against the backdrop of a protracted terrorism case involving his fellow NUP member and former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi and several others.
The terrorism charges against Kivumbi stem from violent political clashes and post-election unrest that occurred in Butambala in January this year.
This month, Kivumbi appeared before the International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court to apply for bail. State prosecutors raised no objections to his five presented sureties.
However, the main terrorism trial suffered further adjournments because the prosecution failed to produce the case file in court.
The June adjournment has attracted criticism from defence lawyers, who question the continued remand of suspects amid repeated delays by the state.
